Pop Charts 6/21/2014

In this column, I provide brief notes and reviews for all of the number one songs in the United States according to the Billboard charts. In addition to the #1 overall song (as per the Hot 100 chart), the top songs on Billboard’s primary genre charts are also featured.

This week (issued for 6/21/2014), Iggy Azalea claims yet another chart while Florida Georgia Line return to the top of the Country chart.

Hot 100, Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop: Iggy Azalea – “Fancy (feat. Charli XCX)”

It’s week number three at #1 for “Fancy,” which now also tops the Pop genre chart in addition to the Hot 100 and the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The more I hear it, the more I come to admire Azalea’s attitude, but still struggle with the boring production and rhymes.

Rating: 5

Country: Florida Georgia Line – “This Is How We Roll (feat. Luke Bryan)”

After two months or so of Luke Bryan’s “Play It Again” at #1, Florida Georgia Line’s “This Is How We Roll” reclaims the top spot. This is partially due to a remix featuring Jason Derulo making gains on crossover charts. Billboard seems unsure of how to handle two concurrent versions of the same song, so while the remix with Jason Derulo appears on the Hot 100 chart, the Billboard Country chart features the original version. Either way, “This Is How We Roll” is harmlessly mediocre.

Rock: Paramore – “Ain’t It Fun”

Paramore slides down the Hot 100 a bit, but maintains its hold on the Rock chart. As mentioned before, it is my favorite #1 of the current year across all formats.

Rating: 8

Dance/Electronic: DJ Snake & Lil Jon – “Turn Down for What”

“Turn Down for What is nearing its third month at #1 on the Dance/Electronic chart and maintains its position at #4 on the Hot 100. Meanwhile, Calvin Harris’ “Summer” stalls at #9 on the Hot 100, while Disclosure’s “Latch (feat. Sam Smith)” moves into the top 20 for the first time at #17 thanks to gains made on Top 40 radio formats.

Rating: 7

Latin: Enrique Iglesias – “Bailando (feat. Descemer Bueno & Gente de Zona)”

“Bailando” has made some serious gains on the Hot 100 the past two weeks and now stands as the #53 song in the country. No other Latin format song appears on the Hot 100 this week, indicating that its lead is substantial.
